Learnt of the death of Vera Atkins CBE, today. Coincidentally, she died on Saturday when the Violette Szabo museum was opened (See below).

The Daily Telegraph and The Times both had informative obituaries although they couldn't agree on her age which raised a chuckle.

I have the Daily Telegraph obituary in the Vera Atkins section, they waived the fee to reproduce it here. Unfortunately The Times wanted money to reproduce their obituary. Enough said! More info here.

24th June 2000
The Violette Szabo GC Museum at Wormelow, near Hereford, Worcestershire, England opened today. Good coverage from Sky news and wonderful interview with Rosemary Rigby MBE, the brains and driving force behind the project, and Violette's daughter, Tanya.

The museum was opened by Virginia McKenna, who portrayed Violette in the film "Carve Her Name With Pride". Leo Marks was also there, the man who wrote the poem-code "The Life That I Have".
